I love to read and discuss what I am reading and I love to hear what my friends are reading. So I started this blog for that purpose. My favorites are historical fiction and biographies, but I try to read some current best sellers and a children's book every other time. Please share your opinions on the books I am reading and let me know what you have enjoyed lately! What have you read lately?
Please post something here about the good books you are reading!
I recently finished Kate Chopin’s The Awakening. Chopin published this short novel in 1899 to much controversy. The plot centers around a woman married to an up and coming New Orleans businessman who sheds her social obligations after an “awakening” summer on Grand Isle. The main character, Edna, sheds her family responsibilities, social pretensions, and even her family’s home. It was one of the first books to grapple with the independent desires of a young mother. It would make a great weekend read, it is 190 pages with extremely short chapters, or an off and on reader. Highly recommended
I loved the book The Same Kind of Different as Me by Ron Hall and Denver Martin(?). Powerful message about how people should reach out and help each other. It is a true story and has a powerful message. It really makes one evaluate their own life and how you can reach out and truly make a difference in someone's life.
I read Hotel at the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. Beautifully written novel, having to do with the struggles of Chinese and Japanese families to assimilate into Western culture in the US around the time of WW2, a great love story between two star-crossed teens, and the Japanese internment that rips them apart. Great read.
I also read TRAVELING WITH POMEGRANATES, by Sue Monk Kidd and her daughter. Nonfiction, but a great story of their mother daughter relationship, also explores Greek mythology through their travels to Greece, and the daughter's coming to terms with a series of rejections, while Sue comes to terms with growing older. Sometimes the psychology gets a little thick, but it's really an enjoyable look at growing up and growing older.
